How athletics can challenge gender expectations and help girls build confidence, leadership, and strength.

Gender expectations often shape how girls view their bodies, voices, and abilities from a young age. In many situations, they are indirectly taught to be careful, agreeable, and aware. However, sports can challenge these expectations by encouraging strength, confidence, communication, and leadership as celebrated qualities. In this way, girls' sports environments can become feminist spaces that allow young women to develop qualities that society may not encourage, learning to make their own decisions and trust their own abilities.

The Women's Sports Foundation links girls' sports participation to confidence, self-esteem, leadership, and teamwork, supporting long-term growth. These qualities later become protective factors, as they reject the idea that girls should be quiet and unsure of their identities. Instead, these qualities push girls toward feeling heard, capable, and independent, reducing the likelihood of crime in the future. In this sense, girls' sports become feminist spaces because they give girls repeated opportunities to trust themselves. These skills persist later in life, being protective factors that limit criminal behavior.

For Play for Protection, this is one of the central ideas. When girls learn that their voices matter, they may also learn that their futures are worth protecting and pursuing.
