How the athletic routines and habits built through sports strengthen patience, self-control, and accountability that affect everyday choices.

A common misconception is that discipline in sports is simply listening to a coach or following directions. However, it is much more than that, shaping girls' thought processes that linger throughout a lifetime. It becomes the habit of showing up, accepting failure and trying again, and staying committed. This repeated effort teaches girls patience, especially when results do not appear immediately. Outside of athletics, this patience can help girls remain calm before reacting to stress, pressure, or conflict.

Holly A. Cauthen's study The Development of a Sport-Based Life Skills Scale for Youth connects youth sports to self-discipline, patience, emotional control, responsibility, reliability, and decision-making. By practicing patience and discipline in sports, girls may become better prepared to make thoughtful decisions in risky, difficult situations. Being part of a team teaches girls that their actions do not only affect themselves, but also the team as a whole. Therefore, sports teach accountability, as each athlete's effort influence everyone. This is significant because crime prevention is not only about avoiding criminal behavior, but also about building life skills that can affect those around an individual. When girls become used to being responsible to others, whether that is on a small or large scale, they may be more likely to consider the consequences of their choices later in life.

Through discipline, girls can learn to handle pressure and stress with greater control. Although sports cannot solve every difficult situation, they can help build influential habits that become an important part of crime prevention.
